Could You Volunteer Some Time?

We simply would not be able to run many of our activities and events without the hours donated by our volunteers to help Scannappeal.  We are very fortunate to have people with a wide range of talents, skills and interests and who are keen to utilise these to further our fundraising efforts.  Whatever time you have to spare, we can use it!

The level of commitment is very flexible, whether it is once a week, once a month or on an ad hoc basis.  Work in the office and bookshop is split into two shifts per day, 9.30am-12.30pm and 12.30pm-3.30pm, Monday-Thursday.  We also need help on some evenings and at weekends at our events.

You can help!

  • I’m not the right age’ - our youngest volunteer is 17, the oldest is 86
  • ‘I don’t have time every week’ - our volunteers choose what time they can commit.  For some, this is a few hours each year at public collections and events whilst others spend a morning or afternoon each week in the office or bookshop.
  • ‘What skills can I offer?’ - there is always something you can do.  From packing newsletters for mailings to work on the computer, filing, making items for sale, support for events, manning the bookshop - the list is endless!

Read about some of our volunteers ……

‘Helping at Scannappeal’s bookshop has been very rewarding and enjoyable.  It’s great to feel an extra boost when a customer finds just the book for which they were hunting’ - Joan

‘Apart from enjoying helping with fundraising activities, it is satisfying to know that you make a modest contribution supporting a worthy and ongoing cause.  If reading this as a ‘non-volunteer’, I would highly recommend that you join in!’ - Douglas

‘I make sure that all collecting boxes are emptied regularly, help sort and price items for sale at our stall and act as a guide on Scannappeal tours of the hospital.  My husband, Graham, helps at events and has become a very efficient car park attendant!  We enjoy being part of a team and have made many new friends’ - Sandra

Sue works in the office each week and also packs the hundreds of Christmas card orders during the festive season.

‘I started knitting for Scannappeal in 1996 and, to date, I have knitted over 1,000 matinee jackets and hope to reach 2,000 before I retire!’ - Eva

Iris counts all the proceeds from the 300 collecting boxes that need emptying every three months.

The best move I could have made

‘I joined Scannappeal in 2003 following the death of my husband, Mickey.  I wanted to help raise money because I felt the equipment the charity funded led to Mickey’s lung cancer being identified at an early stage, and that bought us another eight years together.  I’m mainly involved in helping organise the bookshop and running stalls.   Becoming a volunteer with Scannappeal was the best move I could have made at that time - it certainly helped me come to terms with the loss of Mickey.  I have made some really lovely friends, some from Scannappeal, and others from the people that come and support us.’      Elsa
